Storm Overflow Pipe
Two for the price of one!
As part of the Lewes sewer up-grade in 2004-5, it was necessary to build a storm overflow pipe through part of the Railway Land. This involved cutting several sycamore trees and changing the character of the woodland near Greyfriars. However, we were able to negotiate compensation and the result was a fully planted hazel coppice to attract nightingales. So every side gained. Southern Water got its overflow pipe and the Reserve got a new habitat.
The photos below show the progress of the pipe and coppice and are taken by adults with learning disabilities who also load them onto the website. Click each photo to enlarge it and to gain a little more information.
