Unlock the Secrets of Ancient Fire-Making!

Join us for a unique, hands-on course where you’ll discover fire-starting methods that allowed our ancestors to survive and thrive in our landscape many thousands of years ago.

From striking flint like Ötzi the Iceman to make sparks, to creating embers with a bow drill and working them into a flame, you’ll gain insights into the skills needed to use these practical techniques effectively, and the depth of knowledge of their environment their successful use implies.

Discussions will also explore the history and cultural significance of fire through the ages.

We will explore the unique perspective of how our ancestors met their needs for lighting from the landscape.  A variety of ancient techniques will be investigated, based on archaeological evidence as well as knowledge of the local environment.

Participants will use local materials to make their own rush-lights, whilst also touching on other historic techniques used to light our ancestors’ lives!
